Head to @riverarts for tickets! Posted @withregram • @greatsociety It’s gone quickly but the last installment of my Channels series (for @riverarts) is coming up on April 13. We’re wrapping up where we started, back at Purpl (@think_purpl) on Main Street in Hastings-on-Hudson. It’s a great room w great vibes.

I’m thrilled to host @stephdavismarimba. Steph is a musical storyteller who is re-contextualizing the way many Americans view the marimba. Steph’s ‘like flower petals...’ program combines traditional West African gyil music, traditional African American spirituals, and the Black classical music tradition, this program engages an Africanist/African-Americanist lens through which to experience the marimba.

A researcher and scholar of African American music and culture, Steph is a teaching artist with Castle of our Skins (@castleskins), a Black arts institution. They teach music theory the Boston Conservatory. They have presented performances and masterclasses on marimba and vibraphone at the University of Central Florida, University of Massachusetts Amherst, and the Center of Mallet Percussion Research at Kutztown University.

Founded in 2011 by clarinetist Pascal Archer, Exponential Ensemble is a mixed chamber music collective comprised of NYC’s top performers and teaching artists. Exponential Ensemble’s mission includes commissioning and premiering works by living composers that are inspired by math, science and literacy.

Archer describes time and matter as the album’s through-line. Amy Brandon’s 𝘊𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘶𝘯 is inspired by a NASA recording of the sun’s crown. Gilad Cohen’s 𝘈 𝘋𝘢𝘳𝘬 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 sees astrophysics’ concept of dark matter as a reminder that the universe is mostly made of matter that we can’t even see or define. And composer Robert Paterson takes inspiration from Einstein's Theory of Relativity.
