Pianist Danny Holt’s “Piano Music of Mike Garson,” out April 22 on Innova Recordings, showcases the piano music and compositional technique of Mike Garson. Holt, whose playing has been described as virtuosic and gregarious in temperament by Gramophone, was awestruck by Garson’s music upon the first hearing. Holt sensed an artistic kinship immediately, and when the two first met in 2004 he discovered that he was right. It turned out that Garson had heard Holt play as an adjudicator in a competition several years prior, and that he had a feeling Holt “might be someone who would ‘get’” his music. And here we are.
