A Far Cry’s season 13 continues on November 1 at Jordan Hall. The program, “American Noir,” features music mostly by Jewish immigrants who fled Europe, settled in Southern California, and set the tone for a generation of film music. It’s a program that illuminates the optimism that can arise in very dark times.
The concert continues A Far Cry’s season-long exploration of “Entartete Musik” – “degenerate” music banned during the Nazi regime. This series of five concerts started with a sold-out September concert at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and continues with chamber concerts on November 23 and February 1. Violinist Jesse Irons plainly states: “The unfamiliarity of most of this inventive, vibrant, and moving music is both a stain on the Western musical canon and evidence of the enduring effectiveness of Nazi persecution.”
